The goal of spelling instruction is to:
  • have students correctly spell words that they already understand and know
  • have students spell high frequency and patterned words identified in weekly word lists
  • have students spell these words correctly in their writing

Five Step Word Study Method

 

1.      Look at the whole word carefully

2.    Say the word aloud

3.    Spell the word, saying each letter to yourself

4.    Write the word from memory

5.    Check your written work against the correct spelling

 

Repeat the process at least three times for each word.
